Ohio Auto Insurance
Are you a resident of the Buckeye State? If you are, it's your lucky day! Ohio residents have the opportunity to get affordable insurance in a matter of seconds with Branch. Whether this is your first time purchasing car insurance or you're already a pro, here's a few things that make Ohio auto insurance different from other states.
Ohio Minimum Auto Insurance
Each state has their own laws regarding the minimum auto insurance coverage needed for each vehicle, and since Ohio drivers drive an average of 9,700 miles per year, it's important you have the right coverage. While there are many options to add more coverage for your vehicles, the following is the minimum requirement for Ohio residents:
- Bodily injury liability coverage: $25,000 per person
- Bodily injury liability coverage: $50,000 per accident
- Property damage liability coverage: $25,000 per accident
Let’s break these coverages down a little bit further.
If you get into an accident, bodily injury liability coverage pays for the injuries you cause to another driver and/or their passengers. The state minimum coverage requires that you have coverage for at least $25,000 per person for any injury they have as a result of the accident up to $50,000.
Here’s a few scenarios to better explain this:
Scenario 1:
Let’s say there’s 1 person injured in an accident you cause. That person’s total cost of injury is $40,000. While your policy allows for up to $50,000 per accident, it only allows up to $25,000 per person. You are on the hook for the other $15,000 out-of-pocket.
Scenario 2:
This time there are 2 people injured in an accident you cause. Person A has injuries costing $40,000 and Person B has injuries costing $20,000. Since your per person limit is $25,000, you’ll be responsible for covering the remaining $15,000 of Person A’s injuries. And since your policy covers $50,000 per accident, your insurance will cover all of Person B’s injuries.
Property damage liability coverage covers the damage and cost of repairs you cause to another car or property if you get into an accident. This means if you get into an accident and get pushed off the side of the road, ultimately running over someone’s mailbox and part of their fence, you’ll have at least $25,000 of coverage to repair all of that damage.
